Please join us on Wednesday, March 18th where we will welcome Tom Kline from Structural Technologies who will be presenting on a the Repair of Fire-Damaged Reinforced Concrete Structures.
Presentation Abstract - Concrete behaves in distinctive ways when exposed to high temperatures because of its moisture content. As heat rises during a fire, this internal moisture moves toward the surface, then eventually depletes, leading to chemical and physical changes in the cement paste and aggregates. These changes cause micro-cracking, weakened bonds, and strength loss. Many aggregates also expand under heat. Since real fire events rarely have temperature data, investigators rely on visual clues. This seminar will touch on the following topics with relations to fire-damaged reinforced concrete structures:
• Concrete behavior during a fire event
• Reinforcement considerations in evaluating a fire-damaged structure
• How to assess a concrete structure after a fire event
o Phases 1 & 2 of a Fire Damaged Repair Program
• Repair strategies

After a fire disrupts operations and damages a facility, it’s important to determine the full scope of structural repairs needed. A successful restoration relies on an investigative method that Locates, Qualifies, and Quantifies (the LQQ approach) the fire-related deterioration so owners can make informed decisions. The ultimate goal is to restore the structure’s integrity, so the repaired areas work seamlessly with the original concrete system.
Presenter - With over 45 years of experience in structural repair and rehabilitation of concrete structures. Mr. Kline has experience in investigation, design, planning and execution – having worked on over 2,500 individual projects. He has accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience both nationally and internationally, for Structural Group companies. He has led and developed a team of technical experts in providing design-build capabilities, developing turnkey repair strategies, and implementing sophisticated and verifiable repair programs for a wide range of concrete repair projects.
